Verification of English Proficiency for Incoming Students

Main content start

If English is not your first language and you are not a U.S. citizen/resident, additional testing or documentation may be required to demonstrate sufficient English proficiency to be successful in your graduate program.

English Placement Test

If you were required to submit English proficiency test scores and scored below 109 (TOEFL) / 8 (IELTS) at the time of application, you will be required to take the English Placement Test. There are no exceptions to this requirement, even for those who score just below the cutoff. The test takes place shortly before the first quarter of graduate study and is administered by the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program, who will determine whether language courses are required or recommended to support your success in the graduate program.

You will receive an email notification of this To Do item on your Axess account if you are required to take the English Placement Test.

Educational Experience in English

If you were not required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores based on your completion of a post-secondary degree or 2 consecutive years of educational experience in English, we may require you to submit supporting documentation in the form of an official statement from the institution certifying that your program was taught exclusively in English.

We will contact you directly with instructions to submit this information after you accept your offer of admission.

Professional Experience in English

If you were not required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores based on your completion of 2 consecutive years of professional experience in English in the past 10 years, we require verification of your English proficiency to be submitted by your supervisor or authorized company representative.

We will contact you directly with instructions to submit this information after you accept your offer of admission.
