In light of the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, Stanford reaffirms its commitment to perform individualized, holistic review of each applicant to its graduate and professional programs. We recognize that students may have faced significant challenges during the period of disruption caused by the pandemic, and we will take such individual circumstances into account during application review. Importantly, we will respect decisions regarding the adoption of Credit/No Credit and other grading options during this unprecedented period of COVID-19 disruption, whether they are made by institutions or by individual students. Our goal remains to form graduate student cohorts that are excellent and encompass a diversity of perspectives, backgrounds and experiences that enrich the graduate educational experience.

We are aware of some school closings in areas impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, and that it may delay some courses of study as well as the reporting of official school documents. If you are impacted by this, please contact our office to request an extension: gradadmissions@stanford.edu. We will do our best to work with you and your department.

Admitted students: see our special instructions for submitting transcripts.

Accommodations for Applicants with Extenuating Circumstances

There are instances when extraordinary circumstances arise that make it difficult to complete an application to graduate study on time. Some outside factors could be:

  • natural disasters
  • political/civil unrest
  • pervasive network/power outages

We understand this can be a stressful time for those affected, and we encourage you to address your immediate needs.

As of March 6, 2020: We are aware of some school closings in areas impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, and that it may delay some courses of study as well as the reporting of official school documents. If you are impacted by this, please contact our office to request an extension: gradadmissions@stanford.edu. We will do our best to work with you and your department. Please note: The coronavirus situation does not impact how Stanford evaluates applicants.

The following lists flexible options in order to complete your application, and again, only pertain to those who meet the above extraordinary circumstances:

I am unable to submit my application by the application deadline.

If you need an extension in submitting your application, please reach out to Graduate Admissions <gradadmissions@stanford.edu>* and we will inform your department.

I am unable to take the GRE or TOEFL exam before the application deadline.

Enter a future test date in your online application. If you will be delayed in taking your test after the deadline, contact Graduate Admissions <gradadmissions@stanford.edu>* who will consult your department.

Can recommenders send letters after the application deadline?

Yes, we will allow that. Contact Graduate Admissions <gradadmissions@stanford.edu>* if this will be the case. Recommenders may upload letters after the deadline. Letters can only be uploaded as we do not accept mailed letters.

Transcripts.

Unofficial transcripts can be uploaded with your application. If you are offered admission to graduate study, you will be required to submit official transcripts.

Do you offer fee waivers?

Unfortunately, we are not able to waive or defer payment of the application fee. The application is considered incomplete without the fee, however, we can work to extend the whole application deadline for students who have extenuating circumstances.

A limited number of need-based fee waivers are available. Please see our Fee Waiver page to determine if you qualify and to get instructions on how to apply. Please note that deadlines and restrictions apply.

*When submitting an email to Graduate Admissions, in the subject line use "Seeking accommodations."

The information on this page is only for those who are facing extraordinary circumstances outlined above.
